When the kids were little, there was a Mexican restaurant on Little League Boulevard that Ben simply called, “The Taco Restaurant,” though I think it was actually named Fiesta Cancun. Ben was just discovering dining out, and I think it was still kind of magical to him that you could say the name of the food you wanted to eat, and in due time, it appeared before you! He loved this place so much that sometimes in church, he was known to enthusiastically sing hymns, replacing the words with “taco restaurant,” I guess to soften us up for the possibility of eating there after church.
One time, we told the kids they had to agree on a place together, and at the time, Sophia was a little cool towards Mexican food. She suggested any number of other places to Ben, who answered each time with “taco restaurant.”
She tried a different approach. “But Ben, what would you rather have than a taco?”
Ben didn’t miss a beat. “Two tacos.”
Though Ben’s appetite has expanded significantly since then, he is still a boy who knows what he wants. He never dithers around, wondering what he should order. At Don Patron, he gets the Pancho Villa every time, and he is always a satisfied customer.
Tonight, Ben’s Pancho Villa enthusiasm swayed Phil and me to join him, while Sophia went with the Cancun Burrito. Usually, we start with the chips and salsa, which are really good, but somehow, when they are competing with the main event, they don’t inspire the same feeding frenzy they do when we’re eating in the restaurant. Everything was delicious!
We did Don Patron last week…I had shrimp tacos and Joe had burrito supreme. Delicious!
Great minds think alike!
I love the picture of Ben and Sophie at an earlier stage!
