In a family of educators, we are feeling the stress of the current Coronavirus threat. We are coping the best way we know how, which means we are cooking up a storm!
A few years ago, when our kitchen was being redone, we had to make do the best we could. I joked that I was going to write a cookbook called, “Meals for End Times.” There would be a chapter on cooking when you don’t have a stove, one for when you are missing a kitchen sink, one for when the whole construction crew is living at your house and you’re working full time and feeding them too. I guess now I would add a chapter for cooking under duress.
Nobody knows what the future holds, and you may be sick to death of people sharing their take on it, but nonetheless, I’ll share. These are scary, trying times, and I’m worried by those who either dismiss it as hype, or who say that there is nothing they can do, so they will do nothing. I believe that as a member of a family, as a teacher, and as a human, it is my moral obligation to continue using good hygiene, and to practice social distancing. For those of us who are used to working full steam ahead, this is not easy, but it must be done. Am I scared? Of course. Will I let that fear paralyze me? No. I will listen to health care experts, and do my part. It’s not about me. I will do my best to be part of the solution, and then I will do my best to let go of the rest, which is out of my hands. If your way of coping with the serious situation is to post something hilarious – I’m all for it. If we can’t laugh, then, truly, all hope is gone.
Stay tuned for what we cook and eat in the next two weeks!
