The CTL’s production of The Wizard of Oz this weekend was amazing! As the wizard, Ben felt a wizard cake was in order. What is a wizard cake, you ask? Whatever your answer is, yes, you’re right. It was the first thing I could think of to say when Ben wanted to be feted with memorable food. Of course, prepping for performances takes normal meal times off the table, so wizard cake seemed like a good post-show solution. Celebratory theatrical cake is all about branding and accessories. We followed the recipe below, but instead of topping with caramel nut topping, we made a peanut butter icing from 1 cup softened butter, beaten until fluffy, 1 cup creamy peanut butter, 1 teaspoon vanilla, and 2 cups powdered sugar, all beaten until completely combined and smooth. Deliciously outrageous. Decorate cake with Wizard of Oz symbolism. (If you are making a Beast Cake (Beauty and the Beast), decorate with beastly touches. If you are The Sultan in The Jungle Book, Colonel Hathi in The Jungle Book, The Mayor of Whoville in Sesssical: The Musical, or Daddy Warbucks in Annie, decorate accordingly.)
Wizard Cake
At some point, Ben started referring to himself in the third person. “The Wizard is hungry!” “The Wizard is going home!” “The Wizard needs a bigger piece of cake than that!”
