Ben is digging his adult life these days. Though we set out guidelines for what treats he can consume during the day, and his caregivers are great about sticking to the plan, he is making full use of various gift cards to places like Walmart, where aisles brim with earthly delights, like soda, chips, and candy. Don’t get me wrong, he is adhering (usually) to the letter of the law, and not exceeding his daily consumption limits of said delights, but we may need to build an addition onto the house for all the extra goodies he keeps purchasing.
Oh, but that Ben’s a slippery one. I have pinpointed his delayed gratification clock to 14 hours. On Saturday, he got up around 5:30 and ate an entire King-sized pack of Reese’s. I found the wrapper evidence in the trash can. Alas, he flew too close to the sun on wings of peanut butter and chocolate. He was busted. When I told him that he and snack purchases were taking a break this week, he had to know it was coming, but it didn’t stop his favorite technique of evading the boom while it was being lowered.
“Ben,” I started, while mounting my high horse, “you are…”
“Delightful,” he helpfully supplied before I had a chance to finish my statement.
Indeed. It is a very disarming strategy that I know he wouldn’t have deployed if I were truly mad, but being only mildly dismayed, it achieved its aim. Oh, he’s banned from further snack purchases this week, but he made me laugh. There are worse ways to start your day.
On Labor Day, when I always have a day off work, Ben and I did our traditional Labor Day Park Crawl. Kind of. Our (my) intention was to bike to 3 different parks, before picnicking with Phil at the college. Turns out, Ben was so excited about eating with Dad, that Brandon Park was our only stop before Lyco.
Ben suggested making Chicken Veggie Pitas https://bensdaywednesday.com/something-bold-something-new-something-borrowed-something-bleu/ for supper the day before, and having leftovers for our picnic. Brilliant! They are a little messy, but so is life, and if the worst thing about the day is that you finish off the pita filling with a spork, then it’s been a pretty good day.
So delightful to take a break from the bad news of the day and read about Ben’s day! Thank you.
Thanks for reading!
