Here at Ben’s Day Wednesday, we believe that advancement should be based on merit. Ben did such a thorough job peeling carrots last spring that we thought surely he would be qualified to run the FDA or maybe become the new Garlic Press Secretary or something, but he’s still waiting for the phone call that would move him up the ranks. While he waits for the nod, he continues to hone his carrot peeling technique, this week leaving half the peels on.

The carrots accompanied crushed potatoes with rosemary salt and citrus shrimp kebabs, which allowed him to do his other favorite kitchen job, “painting” on marinade. Both recipes can be found in our recipe index or in the links below. It may be the orangest meal we’ve ever made. I guess that’s what you get in a carrotocracy!

Though it is hard for me to believe, this week marks seven years since Ben and I started this blog. When I look back over old posts, I am struck by the changes in our world and in us as we move through it. I have recorded our kitchen antics, told all of my Ben stories, quite a few Phil stories, and tales of family life through my lens. Ben no longer slides into the kitchen with his chef’s hat askew, ready to go as the Sideways Chef. Sometime in the last seven years, when I wasn’t looking, Ben grew up. As much as he seems to resist receiving instruction from me, he has learned some actual skills, and he wants to do a good job. Don’t worry. Ornery Ben is still there; only yesterday he blamed a kitchen fart on Alexa. More often now, though, I see the side of him that wants what we all want – a seat at the table.
